On Saturday, October 15th, Team BC HRMA – Vancouver Crusaders walked 5km in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (BC/Yukon Division) during their annual Light the Night fundraiser.

Light The Night is a memorable event, held each fall, where people touched by a blood cancer come together and walk at twilight carrying colored, twinkling balloons that symbolize their personal connection to blood cancers.  Red for supporters, white for survivors, and gold represents a life lost to one of these diseases. This year’s team had more than 15 people raising funds and more than 20 people walking on Saturday. The team’s efforts have resulted in BC HRMA’s largest fundraising year yet with $13,064 to date and growing.

“This year is especially bittersweet since it is the first year we have walked and raised money without our cherished colleague and friend Lynn Webb-Thomas who passed away from leukemia on August 28th,” said Quinne Davey, BC HRMA’s team captain “We know she is watching us from a better place and is proud we are continuing to do what we can to help the foundation find a cure for blood cancers.”

Simon Evans, BC HRMA’s CEO had this to say about this staff-initiated fundraiser: “We have been walking this road with Light the Night for the past six years and it has generated tremendous support among our BC HRMA team and members, both financially and collaboratively. Together we have raised just over $31,000 in support of our staff and their family members who have been impacted by the challenges of leukemia and other blood cancers.  This year’s gathering was no different except for the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Lynn Webb-Thomas which made the night’s success all the more poignant.”

Also in attendance at the walk was BC HRMA staff member Marie-Chantal Marchand who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009 and received a bone marrow transplant this past February.

“As a leukemia patient/survivor, I benefit greatly from the services offered by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. Not only does the money raised during ‘Light the Night’ provide much needed funding for research into finding a cure and the most efficient and current disease management therapies, including the life-saving stem cell transplant I received, but the funds also go towards the services and resources offered to patients,” said Marchand.

“Since the day I was diagnosed two years ago, LLS has been there for me, providing me with all the information related to my disease, what to expect emotionally and physically, the treatments, procedures, chemo, meds, side-effects, dietary needs and restrictions, disease management, and tips and advice on daily living at each stage of the journey.”
