Bill 138: HR Steps Toward Public Domain in Ontario
On November 23, 2010, Bill 138, the Registered Human Resources Professionals Act, 2010 was introduced in the Ontario Legislature.
Bill 138, a private member’s bill, would establish a new act governing Ontario’s Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA).
The proposed Bill would move the profession into the Public domain and would place human resources on the same plane as other regulated professions such as Accountants and Engineers.
Bill 138 has generated interest within the human resources community and BC HRMA’s Board of Directors would like to keep BC HRMA members informed of this development. If you would like to learn more about Bill 138, the text version can be viewed online. HRPA has also provided a Questions and Answers factsheet with respect to Bill 138 to their members. This can be viewed on HRPA’s website.
Bill 138 has commenced the normal legislative process and if passed, would only apply to Ontario members.
It does not apply to CHRPs in British Columbia. The CHRP designation is granted by BC HRMA in British Columbia and the designation will continue to be transferable in the event a member relocates.
BC HRMA will continue to monitor the status of Bill 138 and update members as necessary.
